Swale Maintenance: When Your Drainage Ditch Stops Draining

Swales are one of the most common stormwater features on residential and commercial properties across the Lowcountry. They’re also one of the most misunderstood. Most property managers think of them as “just a ditch,” but swales are engineered best management practices (BMPs) with specific design parameters, maintenance requirements, and compliance obligations. When a swale stops working, it doesn’t just look bad. It creates flooding, erosion, and water quality problems that can trigger violations from your local stormwater authority.

What a Swale Actually Is
A swale is a shallow, vegetated channel designed to collect, slow down, filter, and convey stormwater runoff. Unlike a pipe or a concrete channel, a swale relies on vegetation and gentle slopes to do its job. Water enters the swale, spreads across the channel bottom, and moves slowly toward an outlet. As it travels, the grass or other vegetation filters out sediment and pollutants. Some of the water infiltrates into the soil. The rest reaches the outlet at a controlled rate.
The key design elements are the cross-section shape (typically trapezoidal or parabolic), the longitudinal slope, the vegetation type, and the side slope ratios. These aren’t random. They’re calculated to handle specific flow volumes at specific velocities. When any of these elements change, the swale stops performing as designed.
This is why maintenance matters. A swale that looks fine to the untrained eye might actually be failing its design criteria.
Swales vs. Ditches: There’s a Real Difference
People use “swale” and “ditch” interchangeably, but they’re not the same thing. A ditch is an incidental drainage feature. It collects water and moves it somewhere. That’s it. A swale is a designed BMP with engineered dimensions, specified vegetation, and a documented role in the site’s stormwater management plan.
Why does this distinction matter? Because if your property has a feature labeled as a swale on the approved stormwater plans, it carries maintenance obligations. Your municipality or county expects that swale to perform a specific function. If it degrades to the point where it’s just a ditch, you’ve got a BMP failure on your hands. And BMP failures show up on inspection reports.

Common Signs Your Swale Is Failing
Swale problems don’t happen overnight. They develop gradually, and most property managers don’t notice until the damage is significant. Here are the warning signs to watch for. Standing Water
Water should move through a swale, not sit in it. If you see ponding 48 hours after a rain event, the swale has a grading problem, a clogged outlet, or both. Standing water kills turf grass, breeds mosquitoes, and means the swale isn’t conveying flow as designed.
Erosion at Inlets and Outlets
The points where water enters and exits a swale take the most abuse. Look for exposed soil, undercut edges, headcutting (erosion moving upstream), and displaced riprap. Inlet and outlet erosion is often the first sign of a velocity problem. The water is moving too fast for the channel to handle.
Channel Migration
A swale should hold its designed alignment. If the channel is shifting laterally, cutting new paths, or widening on one side, the flow pattern has changed. This usually means the side slopes have eroded or upstream conditions have changed, sending more water into the swale than it was designed for.
Vegetation Die-Off
Healthy vegetation is what makes a swale work. Bare soil in the channel bottom means sediment isn’t being filtered, flow velocities are increasing, and erosion is accelerating. Vegetation die-off can result from prolonged ponding, shade from overgrown trees, herbicide drift, or simply the wrong grass species for the conditions.
Sediment Buildup
Sediment accumulation in the channel reduces capacity and changes the cross-section geometry. A swale that’s gradually filling with silt is losing its ability to convey design flows. You’ll notice this as the channel getting shallower over time, with water overtopping the banks during moderate storms.
Maintenance That Actually Prevents Problems
Swale maintenance isn’t complicated, but it has to be consistent. Here’s what a proper maintenance program looks like.
Mowing
Mow swales regularly, but not too short. Grass height between 3 and 6 inches is ideal for most turf swales. Shorter grass reduces filtration capacity and exposes soil to erosion. Taller grass can impede flow and trap too much sediment. Mow on the same schedule as the rest of the property, but set the mower height appropriately for the swale sections.
Never scalp a swale. Cutting too low damages the root system and creates bare spots that erode quickly during the next storm.
Debris Removal
Remove leaves, branches, trash, and any other debris from the swale channel monthly, or more frequently during fall. Debris dams create localized ponding and redirect flow in unintended directions. They also decompose into fine organic material that clogs the soil.
Sediment Removal
When sediment accumulates to the point where it’s visibly changing the channel shape, it needs to be removed. For most swales, this means a cleanout every 3 to 5 years, depending on upstream conditions. Properties near active construction or unpaved areas may need more frequent removal.
Check Dam Repair
Many swales include check dams, which are small barriers across the channel that slow flow velocity and promote infiltration. Check dams made of stone can shift or settle. Wooden check dams rot. If check dams are part of your swale design, inspect them at least twice a year and repair or replace as needed.
When a Swale Needs Professional Repair
Routine mowing and debris removal are tasks any industry crew can handle. But some swale problems require professional grading and erosion control work.
You need a contractor when:
- The channel has eroded to the point where the original cross-section is gone
- Regrading is needed to restore proper slope and alignment
- Inlet or outlet structures are damaged or undermined
- The swale needs to be re-vegetated after significant erosion or die-off
- Upstream conditions have changed and the swale needs to be resized
- Check dams need to be rebuilt to meet design specifications
Trying to fix these problems with a field crew and a Bobcat usually makes things worse. Swale regrading requires understanding the design parameters, matching the original cross-section, compacting fill properly, and establishing vegetation before the next storm.
What Regrading and Repair Costs
Cost varies significantly based on the length of swale, the severity of damage, access conditions, and what’s needed for re-vegetation. As a general range for the Lowcountry market:
- Minor regrading (restoring cross-section on a short section, 50-100 linear feet): $2,000 to $5,000
- Full swale restoration (complete regrade, new sod or seed, inlet/outlet repair): $5,000 to $15,000 depending on length
- Check dam reconstruction: $500 to $2,000 per dam depending on material and size
These numbers assume reasonable equipment access. If the swale is in a tight residential area with limited access, costs go up. If the swale is part of a larger storm drainage system that needs attention, there may be economies of scale.
The important comparison isn’t what the repair costs. It’s what happens if you don’t do it. A failed swale that triggers a notice of violation leads to engineering assessments, corrective action plans, and penalties that can easily exceed the cost of the original repair by a factor of three or more.
The Compliance Connection
Here’s what many property managers don’t realize: if your property is covered under an MS4 (Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System) permit, your swales are BMPs that require documented maintenance. This is true across Beaufort County, Charleston, Savannah, and most municipalities in the Lowcountry.
